Haltech NEXUS Ti6L Transmission Interface Kit for GM 6L80/6L90 Automatics — Early Access

Part Number: HT-196002

The Haltech NEXUS Ti6L adds integrated GM 6L80 and 6L90 automatic-transmission support to a compatible Haltech NEXUS ECU or VCU.

Unlike the Ti4L, which directly controls the transmission’s internal solenoids, the Ti6L communicates with the factory transmission control module inside the 6L80 or 6L90. The NEXUS ECU supplies engine speed, driver demand, throttle position, calculated engine torque, and related operating data. The factory TCM returns gear position, Park/Neutral status, torque limits, and torque-reduction requests, allowing the engine and transmission controls to operate as a coordinated system.

For NEXUS Rebel LS installations, the supplied terminated harness connects directly to the transmission breakout connector on the Rebel LS engine harness. Initial setup is handled through the Rebel LS Setup Wizard in Haltech NSP or the Haltech Connect App.

This product is currently designated Early Access by Haltech. Transmission compatibility depends on the operating-system version installed in the factory TCM; review the Application Notes before ordering.

Application Notes

  • The Ti6L supports GM 6L80 and 6L90 transmissions only.
  • The 6L50 and other GM 6L-series variants are not listed as supported.
  • The Ti6L is an expansion interface for a compatible NEXUS ECU or VCU. It is not a standalone transmission controller.
  • Elite, Platinum, and earlier Haltech ECU families are not supported.
  • Installation with a NEXUS Rebel LS terminated harness is plug-and-play at the transmission-breakout connection.
  • Universal NEXUS ECU and VCU installations require the 8-pin transmission-breakout connector to be wired for switched 12 V power, power ground, Haltech CAN High, and Haltech CAN Low.
  • The supplied harness connects to the transmission’s factory 16-pin round connector and retains the internal factory TCM.
  • The transmission receives constant battery power through the harness’s fused battery connection.
  • The Ti6L does not directly control the transmission’s shift solenoids. It exchanges operating data and control requests with the factory TCM over CAN.
  • The NEXUS ECU sends data including engine speed, engine demand, throttle position, and calculated engine torque to the TCM.
  • The TCM returns information including gear position, Park/Neutral status, torque limits, and torque-reduction requests.
  • Haltech’s Engine Torque Model must be enabled and calibrated for correct transmission operation.
  • The default Torque Model provides an initial starting point, but the engine-torque table should be refined to represent the engine’s actual output. Dynamometer-derived torque data provides the most accurate basis for this calibration.
  • The supplied shifter breakout includes three analog-voltage inputs that can be used for Tap Up, Tap Down, manual-mode, or related shifter functions.
  • Resistor-ladder and discrete-switch shifter arrangements can be configured, depending on the shifter design.
  • Haltech lists VE Commodore, VF Commodore, Pontiac G8, and Chevrolet SS 6L80 shifters as example external Tap Up/Tap Down applications.
  • This system supports transmissions in which external Tap Up and Tap Down requests are read by the Ti6L and transmitted to the TCM over CAN.
  • Applications that wire Tap Up and Tap Down directly to the transmission’s 16-pin connector must retain that direct-wired arrangement.
  • The shifter assembly is not included.
  • Paddle switches and associated vehicle-side wiring are not included.
  • The transmission must contain a functional factory TCM.
  • The NEXUS ECU and Ti6L identify the operating system installed in the TCM and will only operate the transmission when a compatible OS is present.
  • Haltech currently lists the following known compatible early-hardware TCM operating systems:
    • 24239353
    • 24243170
    • 24249179
    • 24251030
  • Haltech currently lists the following known compatible late-hardware TCM operating systems:
    • 24252573
    • 24254909
    • 24256025
    • 24256125
    • 24261871
    • 24267577
    • 24270599
    • 24276638
  • Haltech recommends reflashing the TCM through NSP to a supported operating system after installation, even when the original OS appears compatible.
  • TCM reflashing requires, at minimum:
    • Haltech NSP version 1.46.3
    • NEXUS ECU firmware version 1.34.0
    • NEXUS Ti6L firmware version 1.11.0
  • The Ti6L can identify the original TCM operating system and install the appropriate supported version from its internal files through NSP.
  • The NSP reflashing process may take 15 minutes or longer.
  • The transmission begins a relearning process after its TCM operating system is reflashed. Shift behavior should be evaluated after installation and calibration.
  • If the Ti6L encounters an operating system Haltech does not currently support, a compatible third-party programming tool is required to extract the original TCM operating-system binary.
  • Haltech requests that unsupported binaries be submitted to its technical-support team for review and states that it will attempt to add support within two business days.
  • Because the product remains in Early Access, access to a suitable third-party extraction tool should be confirmed before purchasing for an unknown TCM operating system.
  • The harness includes a separate TCM CAN service connector for third-party programming access.
  • The optional HT-135000 DTM-4-to-OBD-II cable connects that service port to compatible third-party diagnostic or reflashing equipment.
  • The HT-135000 cable and third-party programming equipment are sold separately.
  • Transmission selection and initial configuration can be completed through the Rebel LS Setup Wizard or manually through Haltech NSP.
  • Initial configuration does not replace final calibration of the Engine Torque Model, shift behavior, torque-management strategy, vehicle-speed data, driveline settings, and application-specific shifter functions.
